Without further to do, here we go:
Week 6 Games
Ha Kung Wong’s Picks
Ha Kung’s Thoughts:
Over the last 4 seasons, I’ve averaged a 65% win percentage, which means that’s now eleven years in a row with over a 60% pick rate. Last year, I also was 95% on my Lock of the Week (20-1) and 50% on my Upset of the Week (10-10). But that was the past, and this is now, and I’m shooting for twelve years in a row for my picks and Locks!
In Week 5, I had a decent 7-7 leaving me 44-34 for the season.
Let’s get to that Lock (for Survivor Leagues) and Upset for Week 6…
Lock of the Week ➡ New England Patriots (-7.5) over New York Jets
Picking the Patriots here isn’t so much an endorsement of New England as it is a recognition that the Jets remain the Jets, a franchise seemingly constructed to make its fans question whether football was a mistake. New England is 3–2 and comes in scorching hot, scoring 74 points over its last two games, including a 29–26 road win over Buffalo and a 45–17 demolition of Las Vegas. After an incredibly slow start, Drake Maye has suddenly turned into a cheat code, throwing for 643 yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception over those two games, while the Patriots have outgained opponents 1,862–1,481 through five weeks. The Jets, meanwhile, are averaging only 4.7 yards per play and have managed just 29 points in their last two games, which is less an offense than a prolonged negotiation over whether someone should eventually reach the end zone. Yes, New York beat Cleveland 17–12 last week, but beating the Browns by five is the NFL equivalent of winning a fistfight with a Roomba: technically an accomplishment, but probably not something you should brag about. With Maye rolling and New England at home, give me the Patriots.
Upset of the Week ➡ Carolina Panthers (+1.5) over Philadelphia Eagles
Strange sentence incoming: Carolina has the much better offense. Through five weeks, the Panthers are averaging 30.2 points and 405.8 yards per game, ranking 4th and 3rd in the NFL, while Philadelphia has lost three straight and is averaging just 18.4 points per game. Bryce Young has looked like the quarterback Carolina thought it drafted No. 1 overall, including 329 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 32–26 win over Detroit. And now the really bad news for Philadelphia: Jalen Hurts has been ruled out, leaving Tanner McKee to make his first start of the season. Hurts wasn’t exactly conducting the 2007 Patriots offense, but removing your starting quarterback from an offense already sputtering is generally not a good thing. Add injuries around Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith, and suddenly Philadelphia’s offense looks less like an NFL unit and more like the group of guys left at the bar after everyone else went home. Carolina is rolling, Philadelphia is reeling, and the Eagles are handing the keys to the backup quarterback. Sometimes an upset pick requires courage; this one mostly requires reading the injury report.
