Week 4 Games

Ha Kung Wong’s Picks

Ha Kung’s Thoughts:

Over the last 4 seasons, I’ve averaged a 65% win percentage, which means that’s now eleven years in a row with over a 60% pick rate. Last year, I also was 95% on my Lock of the Week (20-1) and 50% on my Upset of the Week (10-10).  But that was the past, and this is now, and I’m shooting for twelve years in a row for my picks and Locks!

In Week 3, I had a tough 7-9 leaving me 28-20 for the season.  Don’t worry folks?

Let’s get to that Lock (for Survivor Leagues) and Upset for Week 4…

Lock of the Week ➡ Buffalo Bulls (-6.5) over New England Patriots

The Patriots have been a steaming trash heap this year and the Bills look like they’ve got offensive power to spare.  But that’s not the reason I’m locking in the Bils this week.

Greg Rousseau leads the Bills with 6.0 sacks through three games, anchoring a defense that consistently gets after opposing quarteracks.  Drake Maye has already been sacked 9 times in 3 games and has thrown 6 interceptions against just 1 touchdown.  Josh Allen barely has to do anything this week with the Patriots unable to move the ball consistently.  Doesn’t take a genius to see how this is going to end.

Upset of the Week ➡ Washington Commanders (+3.5) over Indianapolis Colts

It’s not like I think the Commanders are so much better than the Colts, but Marcus Mariota was more than serviceable in Week 3 while the Colts remain looking a bit lost.  Here’s some numbers:

  • 132 — Washington rushing yards/game
  • 141.3 — Indianapolis rushing yards allowed/game
  • 6.5 — yards/play allowed by Indianapolis
  • 1 vs. 6 — Washington turnovers versus Indianapolis turnovers
  • 3.8 — yards/carry allowed by Washington’s defense.

That’s a surprisingly favorable matchup for the Commanders, particularly on the ground.  The Commanders have been exceptionally good at protecting possession, and their strongest defensive attribute — stopping the run — directly attacks Indianapolis’s best offensive weapon in Jonathan Taylor.  The elephant in the room is Washington’s pass defense, which has allowed 841 passing yards and 11 TD passes in three games.  If Daniel Jones exploits that secondary, Indianapolis can absolutely win.  But Washington doesn’t necessarily need to fix its secondary overnight. It needs to run effectively, contain Taylor, win the turnover battle and force Jones to repeatedly beat it.  I wouldn’t be surprised by the upset.

George’s Picks

George’s Thoughts:

Indianapolis vs. Washington (London): Historically the Commanders follow humongous wins like the one vs Seattle with an big time clunker, often against similar level or clearly inferior teams. This is such a game. But Washington’s stellar run defense may just slow down the Colts biggest weapon Jonathan Taylor. And even though the Commanders pass defense is pretty bad I think they can hold out against Daniel Jones and get over the line.

Jacksonville at Cincinnati: Just when you start to believe in the Bengals and their defense they let old, washed and worthless Aaron Rodgers and a previously toothless Steeler offense march up and down the field on them. Well, the Jaguars have better weapons and a better QB and are 1 bad half in Denver away from being unbeaten. They underline their AFC title credentials with a road win here.

Arizona at N.Y. Giants: Yes, the Cardinals have outperformed their low expectations this season. Yes they scored a lot of points and were more than a match at NFC leader San Francisco last week. And yes the Giants couldn’t even get in the end zone against Tennessee and were fortunate to win. But it doesn’t matter I am taking the Giants defense to turn Cam Ward over several times and continue to gather momentum despite the Jaxson Dart injury.

Atlanta at New Orleans: This is a rivalry so where this game is played matters not. What does matter is that the Falcons offense with Michael Penix is hard to stop with a vast array of weapons. New Orleans offense is cooking as well but facing expectations of winning last week against the Raiders at home they flopped. And the Falcons take a massive step in the moribund NFC South with a road win here.
