By the Football Garbage Time Staff

Howdy, y’all!

Last time we gave you our 1st Round Picks and we’re back now with our 2nd Round Picks!

As a reminder, we here at Football Garbage Time again got together and conducted our 10th Annual Twitter NFL Mock Draft!

This year, ten different writers & podcasters from five different sites participated, including:

Each one took part as GMs of several teams in the draft and conducted the mock draft live over several weeks on Twitter (feel free to check out the back and forth on Twitter/X by searching for #FGTMock).  A few trends became clear and we certainly had more than a few surprises.

33 – Carolina Panthers

Pick: Malachi Corley – WR (WKU)

Staff: Adam Aniba

34 – New England Patriots

Pick: Roman Wilson – WR (Michigan)

Staff: Ryan Whitfield

35 – Arizona Cardinals

Pick: Jonathon Brooks – RB

Staff: Scott King

At the top of the second the Cards add some pop in the backfield with the best RB off the board in Brooks.

36 – Washington Commanders

Pick: Kingsley Suamataia – OT (BYU)

Staff: Adam Aniba

37 – Los Angeles Chargers

Pick: Blake Corum – RB (Michigan)

Staff: Wole Akinso

38 – Tennessee Titans

Pick: Nate Wiggins – CB (Clemson)

Staff: Joanne Kong

Although the Titans signed L’Jarius Sneed from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Titans could still add another cornerback to the secondary. The Titans defense wasn’t the worst, falling in the middle and allowing 335.1 average defensive yards and 33 TD, so a few tweaks should go a long way.

Nate Wiggins is tall and long with quick light feet and speed. All qualities of a first-round cornerback. With the ability to stick with receivers through run routes, as well as run down ball carriers, Wiggins became a starter in his sophomore year. He’s versatile enough to play on the right, left and slot position when necessary, allowing for ideal versatility for the defense.

39 – Carolina Panthers (from the New York Giants)

Pick: Troy Franklin – WR (Oregon)

Staff: Adam Aniba

40 – Washington Commanders (from the Chicago Bears)

Pick: Chris Braswell – Edge (Alabama)

Staff: Adam Aniba

41 – Green Bay Packers (from the New York Jets)

Pick: TJ Tampa – CB (Iowa State)

Staff: Kaiden King

42 – Houston Texans (from the Minnesota Vikings)

Pick: Kris Jenkins – DT (Michigan)

Staff: Wole Akinso

43 – Atlanta Falcons

Pick: Kamari Lassiter – CB (Georgia)

Staff: Kaiden King

44 – Las Vegas Raiders

Pick: Michael Penix Jr. – QB (Washington)

Staff: George Templeton

Well, I didn’t think that 2 QBs that could be a potential solution for the Raiders would fall to 44. And in keeping with their tradition at taking big risks on big talent, Las Vegas takes Michael Penix. Yes, the medicals aren’t great and he’s 24 but you saw what he did at Washington. Getting them to the playoffs with so many clutch throws and drives for the Huskies. In terms of pure passing ability, Penix might be the best QB in this draft. The drawbacks are well publicized. This is the Raiders and unlike some other high pick disasters of recent years, Penix is a solid citizen who will work his tail off and become a star if his body lets him.

45 – New Orleans Saints (from the Denver Broncos)

Pick: Jordan Morgan – OT (Arizona)

Staff: Ryan Whitfield

46 – Indianapolis Colts

Pick: Ja’Lynn Polk – WR (Washington)

Staff: Dan Thury

47 – New York Giants

Pick: Kamren Kinchens – S (Miami)

Staff: George Templeton

A lot of good receivers that might’ve slipped to the Giants at 44 didn’t so why not a ball-hawking safety with proven production. Giants secondary has struggled and Kamren Kinchens, with 11 interceptions in his career and a first-team Associated Press all-American award to his name, will be an upgrade for them. Kinchens is a play-maker who will be a huge asset in help coverage against the many excellent wide receivers in the NFC East.

48 – Jacksonville Jaguars

Pick: Keon Coleman – WR (Michigan State)

Staff: Jordan Alexander

49 – Cincinnati Bengals

Pick: T’Vondre Sweat – DT (Texas)

Staff: Ha Kung Wong

The Bengals defense have recently been of the “bend-but-don’t-break” variety, but much of that is built on good coverage and pressure on the line. To avoid having Joe Burrow having to play superman in every game, the Bengals need to generate more pressure on defense, and T’Vondre Sweat may be just what they need. The Bengals spent one of their official pre-draft 30 visits on Sweat based on his college performance and potential.

In 2022, Sweat played in all 13 games and totaled 30 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 4 pass breakups, resulting in an honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference. He stepped up even bigger in 2023 playing in all 14 games totaling 45 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups, one blocked kick, which resulted in him winning numerous accolades including the Outland Trophy given to the nation’s top interior lineman. The main issue is his off field concerns, particularly since he was arrested for a DWI in early April. But honestly, the Cowboys aren’t usually concerned with off field issues, and so long as they can control that, they have a huge DL who will require multiple bodies to block.

50 – Philadelphia Eagles (from the New Orleans Saints)

Pick: Edgerrin Cooper – LB (Texas A&M)

Staff: George Templeton

Philadelphia needs a lot of help on defense, especially there back 7. To get a linebacker like Edgerrin Cooper at 50 is a coup.

Eight sacks and 17 tackles for loss and was named an Associated Press All-American in 2023. Plug and play LB who will give the Eagles defense some much needed bite.

51 – Pittsburgh Steelers

Pick: Ricky Pearsall – WR (Florida)

Staff: Joanne Kong

Currently, George Pickens is the only starting receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers thus making the wide receiver position a necessity for the Steelers this draft. With a deep wide receiver class, the Steelers should be able to find a starting caliber rookie receiver in the second round.

Ricky Pearsall is that wide receiver. At 6 feet and 1 inch, Pearsall has good length extending for the ball when fighting off defenders and speed once in stride. With the ability to handle the ball and comfort making adjustments, Pearsall is excellent target who also is an impressive route runner with the ability to fake out defenders. All qualities of a rookie starter which the Steelers will need to build this upcoming season.

52 – Los Angeles Rams

Pick: Jermaine Burton – WR (Alabama)

Staff: Scott King

The Rams add more weapons with a solid WR in Burton, giving Stafford more weapons.

53 – Philadelphia Eagles

Pick: Adisa Isacc – Edge (Penn State)

Staff: George Templeton

With Philadelphia’s second round pick in 4 I was very tempted to go secondary again. But Adisa Isaac shouldn’t be available at this spot so I couldn’t pass up bolstering the Eagles pass rush here as. When I watched Penn State you saw Isaac was constantly in the action. You are getting a guy that goes hard every play and strikes me as very coachable and versatile.

54 – Cleveland Browns

Pick: Jonah Elliss – Edge (Utah)

Staff: Scott King

The Browns finally get a pick and land the edge Elliss out of Utah. This front line will be great.

55 – Miami Dolphins

Pick: Javon Solomon – Edge (Troy)

Staff: Joanne Kong

Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips are both rehabbing serious injuries and might not be able to start the regular season. It doesn’t help that Cameron Goode is also rehabbing a knee injury. The Dolphins added Shaquil Barrett during free agency, but the Dolphins will still need someone in the first two rounds to plug in and play.

Javon Solomon is an exciting pass rusher posting extraordinary numbers, with a career high sack total of 16 in 2023. Solomon was part of the team that won back-to-back Sun Belt titles in 2022 and 2023. He has a strong physique, is explosive coming off the edge, has speed and great acceleration and the ability to change directions quickly to adjust to pursue the ball carrier.

56 – Dallas Cowboys

Pick: Trey Benson – RB (FSU)

Staff: Ha Kung Wong

It’s no surprise that running back is a priority for the Cowboys this draft after losing Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard in consecutive seasons. And it’s also no surprise that the Cowboys spent one of their official pre-draft 30-visits with Trey Benson.

Benson started in Oregon, but after an early injury and barely sniffing the field, he moved to Florida State and had immediate success. In 2022, led the team with 990 rushing yards (averaging 6.4 yards per carry) and 9 rushing TDs, also adding 13 receptions for 144 receiving yards, resulting in being named second-team All-ACC. He improved on that in 2023 again leading the team with 906 rushing yards (averaging 5.8 yards per carry) and 14 rushing TDs, also adding 20 receptions for 227 receiving yards and a receiving TD, again being named Second-team All-ACC. Benson averaged 3.97 yards after contact during his college career, a reflection of his tough running in the gaps, while also having an 82.1% career completion percentage, demonstrating his effectiveness in the passing game. Perhaps most impressive is that he’s never fumbled the ball throughout his college career, something that the Cowboys are sure to make note of.

Bottom line is the Cowboys need an effective running back, and Benson fits the bill with a thrifty 2nd round pick.

57 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Pick: Payton Wilson – LB (NC State)

Staff: Joanne Kong

Suffering from multiple season injuries going back to high school, Payton Wilson is probably a concern and risk for any team during this draft season. At 23 years old, he’s also on the older side of the spectrum for the NFL. Although injury is a concern, Wilson is currently healthy and finished up his best college season. In Wilson’s sophomore year, he made 108 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and was named first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In his final year, Wilson received the Butkus Award, given to college football’s best linebacker, finishing his college career with 69 solo tackles, 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 3 interceptions and even scored a touchdown. If Wilson is able to remain healthy, he’ll be a top asset for the Buccaneers.

58 – Green Bay Packers

Pick: Bo Nix – QB (Oregon)
