By the Football Garbage Time Staff

If you followed last year, you won over 60% of your picks, and we aim to do even better this year.

And if you’ve been following us, you know that we here at Football Garbage Time have gone head to head against Wally, Will and Ray at Urban Sports Scene on our NFL Picks for the last 4 seasons.  Why?  Because they’re awesome competitors, they KNOW their sports, and, heck, they’re just good guys!  This year we’ll have their picks up right HERE, so keep it tuned in, to both us and them, because we’ll be picking all season all long.

Without further to do, here we go:

Week 5 Games

Ha Kung Wong’s Picks

Ha Kung’s Thoughts:

Last year I ended up with a 66% record for the season, so that’s four years in a row with over a 60% pick rate.  Plus, I had a 94% record on Locks of the Week.  Don’t worry, I don’t plan on stopping now, as I’m still 4 for 4 on Locks!

So let’s see get to that Lock and Upset for Week 5…

Lock of the Week => Philadelphia Eagles (-13.5) over New York Jets

Believe it or not, the Jets defense is ranked 12th per DVOA, so it’s not like they’re a pushover.  But they have the 3rd worst offense per DVOA, and have little chance of success with Luke Falk behind center.  Maybe they make something out of their season once Sam Darnold returns, but the Eagles are coming off a big win against the Packers and have had a long 10 days to prepare their 4th ranked offense for this matchup with the lowly Jets.

Upset of the Week => Arizona Cardinals (+3.5) over Cincinnati Bengals

I’m not saying the Cardinals are good, as they’re ranked 27th in offense per DVOA.  But they do have some play makers (though inconsistent ones) in Kyler Murray, David Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald, even with Christian Kirk likely sidelined.  And more importantly, one of the 5 teams with an even worse offense than the Cardinals is the Bengals, being the second worst offense in the NFL per DVOA.  Now without AJ Green OR John Ross, we’re looking a receiving core head up by Tyler Boyd and Auden Tate.  Sorry, but I don’t understand how the Bengals win this game, particularly after watching them get thumped by the previously 0-3 Steelers on Monday Night Football.

Joanne Kong’s Picks

Joanne’s Thoughts:

Things I learned from Week 4:

  • The New England Patriots defense is legit.

The Patriot offense, not so much.  Winning only 16-10 (which includes a defensive touchdown) against the Buffalo Bills, says a lot for the Bills defense.

  • The Detroit Lions are NFC contenders.

The Lions are 2-1-1 and entering a bye-week.  Shutting out the Kansas City Chiefs in the first quarter, the Lions lost 30-34 with the Chiefs clenching a last minute win.  Doubters of the Detroit Lions can’t dispute this teams offensive output with quarterback Matt Stafford having the 10th most passing yards, 4th most touchdowns passes (9), 2 interceptions, 20th in interceptions (7) this season.

  • It’s not just Minshew’s mustache that’s magic. The Jacksonville Jaguars found a way to win for a second week in a row, much of which was due to Mishew magic, but was also due to Fournette finding his footing.
  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the L.A. Rams with a 50-burger (55-40).  What world are we living in?
  • The Oakland Raiders defeated the Indianapolis Colts (31-24) – without TY Hilton, the Colts were lost and the Raiders took ample advantage.
  • The Cleveland Browns defeated the Baltimore Ravens (40-25) – the Ravens look to be off kilter in week 4…or maybe the Browns were the Cinderella team everyone expected.  We’ll know which after week 5.  The Ravens will be playing the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Browns will face off against a well rested undefeated San Francisco 49ers.

thought last week was a slam dunk and had my first sub 500 showing.  Nothing pithy this week.

George’s Picks

George’s Thoughts:

To anyone that took my advice on the eliminator pick I humbly apologize but the picks are still going well and I am top of the tbale so let’s hit it!

Rams at Seahawks: Leaning Rams only because they have to bounce back after giving up a double-nickel at home to the Bucs. Plus the Seahawks path to 3-1 isn’t very impressive.
Oakland vs. Chicago (London): back on the Raiders after they jumped Indianpolis and held off a rally. Even though the Bears are better off with Daniel there offense still isn’t good and Josh Jacobs is healthier this week. Oakland leans on him and wins a low-scoring game.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans: How can I take the Bucs. Which QB is playing better. Tampa’s. Which offense is better. Tampa’s. Shaq Barrett will have another party in the backfield and dunk all over the Saints.

Minnesota at N.Y. Giants: Why should Kirk Cousins be favored on the road against anybody. I’ll take the quarterback Cousins defenders wish he was, Daniel Jones, over Cousins. And the Vikings are actually entertaining the thought of trading Stefon Diggs.  Ludicrous.

Jacksonville at Carolina: Panthers managed to win despite Kyle Allen fumbling 3 times last week but they will have no answer for #MinshewMagic. Jaguars

Green Bay at Dallas: Cowboys found a way to lose that in New Orleans, but the Packers defense was exposed by the Eagles. Big night for Ezekiel Elliott incoming. Dallas

Cleveland at San Francisco: 49ers are a semi-surprising 3-0 but the Browns are a lot better than what they’ve played. This is Odell Beckham Jr.’s bust out game for this season. Browns roll.

Matt’s Picks

Matt’s Thoughts:

Overview
After a week full of upsets I followed up this week with a whole host of upset picks because apparently we all know nothing about the NFL yet this early in the season.

  • I have the Los Angeles Rams coming into Seattle and getting the W. I know it’s hard to get a win at CenturyLink, but I think that the Rams are a better team on both sides of the ball. I’m not reading too deeply into last week’s embarrassment against Tampa Bay.
  • I keep getting burned by Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals, but it’s hard to pick the Cincinnati Bengals after watching their offensive line on Monday Night.
  • Teddy Bridgewater can’t win every game can he? The 55 point outburst will carry over to this week, as the Bucs offense is looking pretty dangerous this season. Despite 84% of the public going with the Saints I’ll roll with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.
  • There are three games that see the public picking the favorite 99% of the time. I took the cheese going with the Eagles over the Jets, the Patriots over the Redskins, and the Chiefs over the Colts. I have no reason to believe the 1 percenters will win any of these games, however, if you put a gun to my head and said pick one of the three to pull the major upset? I’d go Colts.
  • Aaron Rodgers always seems to pull his best tricks out for the Dallas Cowboys.  The Packers waltz into Jerry world and pull off the upset behind some of that old school Rodgers magic that he missed out on last Thursday.*Public pick percentages are from Yahoo Sports Pick ‘Em UsersUpset of the Week
It wouldn’t be surprising if Danny Dimes had a tough time with the Minnesota Vikings defense this week. However, until he starts looking more like a rookie I’ll ride with Dimes and the Giants who also get Golden Tate back this week. The Vikes definitely scare me on the defensive side, but despite numerous playmakers somethings been off with their offense lately. I like the Giants to win outright despite the 5.5 point spread.
